Journalist Attacked Again in Kakheti

A hand grenade, tossed by an unknown person, exploded in the yard of the house of Gela Mtivlishvili, an editor of the local newspaper Imedi (Hope) in the Gurjaani district of Kakheti, in eastern Georgia, the Georgian media reported on July 15. The explosion caused no casualties.

This was the latest in a series of attacks on Imedi newspaper and personally on Gela Mtivlishvili. The editor-in-chief of this local newspaper was beaten up by unknown persons in Gurjaani on June 22. In January, 2005 the office of the newspaper was raided and robbed.

According to Mtivlishvili, he has been regularly intimidated by local officials since he began publishing a series of articles involving allegations about suspected involvement of local law enforcers in drug trafficking.
