EU ‘Rule of Law’ Mission Ends Activities in Georgia

The European Union ‘Rule of Law’ mission, which helped the Georgian authorities reform its criminal justice system, has completed its activities in the country.

Georgian Justice Minister Kote Kemularia said at a news briefing on July 14 that a concept on reforming the criminal justice system has already been submitted to President Saakashvili for approval.

“This is a Georgian model of the criminal justice system, which envisages implementation of reforms in the judicial, police, ombudsman’s office and legal education systems,” Kote Kemularia said.

According to the concept, two experts from the EU Rule of Law mission will continue to help Georgia develop an action plan.

26 experts from the EU Rule of Law mission worked at various governmental offices for seven months. Ms. Sylvie Pantz of France, who led the ‘Rule of Law’ mission to Georgia, said at the news briefing on July 14 that instead of the original defined one-year term, the experts managed to complete their activities within seven months.

The ‘Rule of Law’ mission, called EUJUST THEMIS, is the first Rule of Law mission launched by the EU in the context of the European Security and Defense Policy.
