Russian MPs Call for Increasing Gas Price for Georgia

Russia?s lower house of Parliament, the State Duma, adopted a statement on July 8 urging the Russian government to consider a possible increase in gas prices for Georgia, Moldova, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania and Ukraine.

The State Duma also called on the Russian government to demand from Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine to repay debt accumulated for gas supply.

But visiting Russian Transport Minister Igor Levitin told reporters in Tbilisi on July 8 that increase of gas price ?is not on the agenda.?

Chairman of the Russian energy giant Gazprom Alexei Miller said on June 24 that the company will increase the price of gas for the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) starting in 2006.

However, the Gazprom chief did not specify what the new price will be, but unofficial reports say that Gazprom plans to raise the price up to USD 70 per 1000 cubic meters. Currently Georgia pays Gazprom USD 60 per 1000 cubic meters of gas.
