Russian MPs Want to Increase Gas Price for Georgia

Russia?s lower house of Parliament, the State Duma, will discuss a draft statement on July 6 urging Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov to consider a possible increase in gas prices for Georgia, Moldova, Latvia, Estonia and Ukraine, RIA Novosti news agency reported.

The proposal was initiated by the Russian parliamentarians from the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), led by ultra-nationalist politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky.

Chairman of the Russian energy giant Gazprom Alexei Miller said on June 24 that the company will increase the price of gas for the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) starting in 2006.

The Gazprom chief did not specify what the new price will be, but unofficial reports say that Gazprom plans to raise the price up to USD 70 per 1000 cubic meters. Currently Georgia pays Gazprom USD 60 per 1000 cubic meters of gas.
