Abkhaz PM: Railway should be Reopened
Prime Minister of breakaway Abkhazia Alexander Ankvab said in an interview with news agency Apsnypress on June 24 that the project of rehabilitation of Abkhaz railway ?should move forward.?
?It is necessary to assess the current condition of the railway section from [Abkhaz capital] Sukhumi to Enguri river [administrative border between Abkhazia and rest of Georgia] by a joint [Georgian, Abkhaz and Russian] commission. Afterwards, we will draft a document regarding the amount of sum necessary for rehabilitation. If the sides reach an agreement, Russia will start rehabilitation of the railway section, as it happened in 2004, when Russia restored the railway section from Psou [river at the border with Russia] to Sukhumi,? Ankvab said.
According to the preliminary calculations, more than USD 100 million is needed to rehabilitate a 60-kilometer long portion of railway between Georgia?s Zugdidi district and capital of the breakaway republic.
