Bagapsh Against Linking Abkhaz Railway with Politics
President of breakaway Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh hailed the possibility of the rehabilitation of the Russian-Georgian railway via Abkhazia; however added that this issue should not be linked with political issues, the Abkhaz news agency Apsnipress reported.
?This is an extremely economic problem and Abkhazia will not agree on any political conditions,? Apsnypress quotes Bagapsh as saying at a news briefing in Sokhumi on June 22.
During talks in Moscow on June 15-16 the Georgian and Abkhaz sides agreed to hold active consultations over the issue of reopening the Abkhaz section of the Russian-Georgian railway, which has been on hold since the conflict in the breakaway region in the early 90s.
According to the preliminary calculations, more than USD 100 million is needed to rehabilitate a 60-kilometer long portion of railway between Georgia?s Zugdidi district and capital of the breakaway republic, Sokhumi.
