Abkhaz Leader: No Need for UN Human Rights Office in Gali
President of breakaway Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh said on June 15 that he does not deem it necessary to open a UN human rights office in the predominantly Georgian-populated district of Gali, in the unrecognized republic, reported the Abkhaz news agency Apsnipress.
?The Abkhaz leadership independently takes measures to protect the rights of citizens living in the Gali district and to establish public order there. We already have success in this respect,? Sergey Bagapsh said.
A UN human rights office already operates in the breakaway region?s capital Sokhumi. But Tbilisi insists that a similar office in Gali be opened as well to oversee the human rights record in this district.
