Saakashvili Hails New Airport Project
President Saakashvili downplayed protests by some opposition parliamentarians regarding the tender, which was held in order to invite private investors to operate and modernize the Tbilisi airport?s infrastructure.
According to these tender results a consortium of three companies – the Turkish ?elebi Group, Luxembourg-based Gestion en Technique Sp?ciale (GTS) and U.S.-based A&J Business Development Corporation – will invest USD 62 million to reconstruct the Tbilisi airport in less than year.
Saakashvili, who was attending the presentation of new project of the airport, hailed this project proposed by the Turkey?s ?elebi Group and said that allegations that the tender was held unfairly are groundless.
After the reconstruction, the Tbilisi airport will be able to serve Airbus 330/340 sized aircrafts and handle a turnover of 2000 passengers an hour. The international consortium of three companies will jointly manage the airport for the next ten and a half years.
