Parliament Lifts Ban on Sale of Farm Land Near Border

Despite Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze?s request, the Parliament approved a draft law, in its second hearing, allowing for the privatization of farm land located in areas adjacent to the state border.

This draft would lift the ban over the privatization of land within a 5-km area of the state border.

Some parliamentarians, including speaker Nino Burjanadze, proposed to postpone the discussions of this document before the delimitation of state borders with Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia has occured. Georgia has a border delimitation agreement with Turkey alone.
