EU’s Rule of Law Mission Outlines Reform Targets for Georgia

The European Union’s Rule of Law mission and Georgian experts have submitted a comprehensive strategy on criminal justice reform, Sylvie Pants, the Head of Rule of Law mission said at a news conference on May 20.


In frames of the Rule of Law mission, which was launched last July, a group of legal experts from EU member states were co-located in the Ministry of Justice, the Supreme Court, the General Prosecutor’s Office, the Interior Ministry, Ombudsman’s Office and Police Academy, providing Georgian officials with recommendations.


Sylvie Pants said that a working group will be set up which will be in charge of implementing of the strategy of reforms, which was elaborated by the mission.


She said that Rule of Law mission ends this July, but she will discuss with EU’s special representatives to South Caucasus Heikki Talvitie those possible measures through which the EU will be able to monitor implementation of the recommendations, which have been developed by the Rule of Law mission.


She did not elaborated details of this document saying that it is up to the Georgian government to unveil it.
