UN Official Briefed Security Council over Abkhazia
The UN Security Council welcomed UN-led Georgian-Abkhaz talks in Geneva last month and voiced continued support for UN efforts to build trust between the conflicting sides, the UN news centre reported on May 4.
The statement came after the UN Security Council heard a closed-door briefing by the Under-Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Marie Gu?henno, who presented a report on the situation in Abkhazia.
Irakli Alasania, the Georgian President?s special envoy for Abkhaz conflict resolution, who also chairs the Tbilisi-based Abkhaz government-in-exile, also made a statement at the Security Council session.
The Council members also expressed their support for the UN Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG) and Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s Special Representative, Heidi Tagliavini, “in the efforts to promote dialogue between the parties on political and security issues, the return of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs), and economic cooperation.
