Saakashvili Comments on Russian Bases
President Saakashvili said in his address to the nation on May 3 that Georgia has ?a historic chance? to settle the problem of the pullout of Russian military bases, adding that Russia should close down these bases before the end of his presidential term.
?We are ready to discuss two or three years, however the process of the pullout of these Russian bases should occur during the term of my presidency [2004-2009 years],? Saakashvili said.
He said that Russia?s two military bases, deployed in Akhalkalaki and Batumi, ?should leave the country gradually, in a civilized manner.?
