Sokhumi Says No to UN Police Deployment in Gali

Foreign Ministry of breakaway Abkhazia denied on April 28 Russian media reports that Sokhumi intends to permit deployment of UN police component in predominately Georgian-populated Gali district of unrecognized republic at administrative border with Georgia, Apsnipress news agency reported.

?The Abkhaz Foreign Ministry reiterates that currently the issue of deployment of UN police component in Gali district is not being discussed between Abkhazia and Georgia,? the statement issued by Foreign Ministry of breakaway region reads.

The Police Component of the UN Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG), which consists of 11 officers from five countries: Russia, Poland, Hungary, Switzerland, and Germany, currently operates only on the Georgian side of the administrative border, in the Zugdidi district, which borders the unrecognized republic?s Gali district. The UN police aims at improving security conditions by assisting in training and equipping local law enforcement agencies.
