Bagapsh Concerned over Crime in Gali District

President of breakaway Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh criticized local law enforcement agencies for failing to tackle crime in the predominately Georgian-populated Gali district of unrecognized republic, Abkhaz news agency Apsnipress reported on April 27.

Sergey Bagapsh said, while meeting with the Interior Ministry officials that some law enforcers are engaged in ?criminal economic activities? in the Gali district. He said that because of these illegal economic activities the ?lives of our citizens are under danger.?

The Abkhaz leader gave one month to the Interior Ministry ?to radically change the situation? there, according to Apsnipress.

He also said that the authorities should boost control over the border in an attempt to prevent the ?illegal cross-border transportation of goods.?

Bagapsh instructed the Abkhaz customs office to install additional checkpoints at its border with Georgia, ?including at the Enguri bridge,? which links Abkhazia with the rest of Georgia.
