Bulgaria, Romania Pledge Support in Georgia’s EU Aspiration
Both the Bulgarian and Romanian Ambassadors to Georgia announced, on April 26, that their governments will become “advocates in the European Union” for Georgia, after both of these countries join the EU.
Bulgaria and Romania signed accession treaties with the European Union on April 25, setting the date for their entry into the EU in 2007 if the two countries are able to comply by necessary political and economic reform targets by that time. The Bulgarian and Romanian Ambassadors to Georgia convened a joint news conference on April 26 regarding this decision.
“Both Romania and Bulgaria will cooperate with Georgia more intensively and support Georgia’s aspiration to joint the European Union,” Constantin Girbea, Romania’s Ambassador to Georgia, said at a news conference in Tbilisi.
He said that intensive cooperation has already started in frames of an informal grouping known as the New Friends of Georgia, which unites the three Baltic States, as well as Romania, Bulgaria and Poland.
“Bulgaria already has close cooperation with Georgia… and after two years, when the Bulgarian parliamentarians take seats in the European Parliament, Georgia will also benefit from this,” Ivailo Brazitzov, Bulgaria’s Ambassador to Georgia, said at a news conference.
