Russia, Georgia to Activate Talks over Border, Visa Issues

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said after the talks with his Georgian counterpart Salome Zourabichvili in Moscow on April 25 that Russia and Georgia plan to activate talks over the issue of border delimitation and visa requirements.

?We have decided to give additional impulse to the issue of delimitation of the border [between Russia and Georgia]. We have also agreed to continue talks over the creation of favorable conditions for the relations of our citizens, including the visa issue,? Interfax news agency quotes the Russian Foreign Minister as saying.

During a meeting between the two countries’ state border delimitation commissions, which was held in Tbilisi from April 20-21, a preliminarily agreed on 120-km borderline at the Daghestani section was approved; however, the Georgian Foreign Ministry reported on April 25 that hard talks are in progress over disputed sections of border

In July 2004 Georgia unilaterally simplified visa rules with Russia, however no retaliatory measure was implemented by Russia. A visa regime between the two countries was enforced in 2002.
