Saakashvili Holds Phone Talks with Bush, Yushchenko

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili held a telephone conversation with his U.S. counterpart George W. Bush on February 15, the Georgian President?s Press Office reported.

A number of political and regional issues were discussed during the talks. President Bush expressed support to the Georgian government?s peaceful initiatives regarding breakaway South Ossetia, according to the Georgian President?s Press Office.

“The two presidents had a good discussion about Georgia’s ongoing efforts to advance democratic reforms, to fight corruption and to expand freedom for the Georgian people,” AFP quoted White House spokesman Scott McClellan as saying.
 
“They also discussed the Georgian government’s serious settlement plan to resolve its separatist conflict in South Ossetia by peaceful means,” he added.

Later, on the same day, President Saakashvili spoke with his Ukrainian counterpart Victor Yushchenko by phone. The Georgian and Ukrainian Presidents agreed to inaugurate “the year of Georgia in Ukraine,” which will promote Georgian cultural activities in Ukraine during 2005. The Georgian President will attend the inauguration ceremony and afterwards Viktor Yushchenko will visit Georgia.
