New Movement Established to Promote Democracy in Adjara
The new public political movement Our Adjara was established on December 26. The movement unites the representatives of intellectual groups of Adjara Autonomous Republic, as well as one of the leaders of the National Movement Davit Berdzenishvili.
“Our supreme goal is to protect the civil rights of the Adjarian population and confirm once again that Adjara is a part of Georgia. We will not let the Adjarian authorities act illegally,” Davit Berdzenishvili said on December 26.
While commenting on the creation of the new movement, Interior Minister of Adjara Autonomous Republic Jemal Gogitidze warned its members to refrain from protest rallies in Adjara until the Autonomous Republic stays under the state of emergency.
“I call on them to keep calm, as the state of emergency has been declared in Adjara and we will not permit any anti-governmental activities in Adjara,” Jemal Gogitidze said at a news briefing on December 26.
He also warned the leaders of the new movement not to open offices in the Autonomous Republic.
