U.S. Official, Adjarian Leader Discussed Situation in Georgia

U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Lynn Pascoe, who visited Adjara Autonomous Republic today, said his meeting with Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze was rather long and fruitful.

He told reporters that they discussed recent developments in the country, as well as the issue of withdrawal of the Russian military base from Batumi, Adjarian capital.

Lynn Pascoe refrained from making any further comments regarding the details of the talks with Aslan Abashidze.

The U.S. intergovernmental team, led by Lynn Pascoe, arrived in Tbilisi on December 3 and is presently holding talks with the Georgian authorities to review assistance, which the U.S. will render to Georgia.

Adjarian leader threatened to boycott the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections, in case the central authorities do not postpone the elections till June.
