Abkhaz, Georgian Sides Agreed to Cooperate Against Crime

The UN-sponsored talks on security matters were held on October 8 between the Georgian and Abkhaz sides in Gali district of breakaway Abkhazia.

Georgian Special Affairs Minister Malkhaz Kakabadze and Abkhaz de facto Foreign Minister Sergey Shamba discussed recently aggravated situation in the Gali district. The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General Heidi Tagliavini and representatives of the Russian peacekeeping troops deployed in the conflict zone also attended the meeting.

The sides signed a protocol envisaging cooperation to take immediate measures to stop criminal activities in the conflict zone; to exchange a list of those crimes, which according to them have been committed in the zone of conflict.

The sides also agreed to assist in introduction of the UNOMIG Civil Police that would further promote cooperation between the two sides in the law enforcement area.

The Georgian and Abkhaz sides will meet again on December 9 at the same high level in order to assess the progress made in their cooperation.
