Putin Calls for Repatriation of Meskhetian Turks to Georgia

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed support to the repatriation of Meskhetian Turks to Georgia, saying they have a full right to return to their native country.

“The talks over repatriation have numerously been held with the Georgian side, but in vain. Georgia is not ready to settle this problem so far,” the Russian President said on October 3.

Georgia has not adopted yet the law on the return of Meskhetian Turks in compliance with the commitment undertaken by Georgia upon its accession to the Council of Europe in 1999.?

According to the commitment, Meskhetians deported in 1944 should be returned to Georgia by the end of 2012.
