National Movement Calls for Nationalization of Strategic Facilities

(Tbilisi, August 2, 2003, Civil Georgia) – The opposition National Movement party prepares a new draft law, which implies nationalization of strategic facilities of Georgia.

Leader of the National Movement Mikheil Saakashvili goes against privatization of strategic facilities, saying these facilities, including the Ferro Alloy Plant in Zestaponi, the Poti Port and communications systems, should be returned to the state.

Saakashvili accused Georgian President of selling the strategic facilities proceeding from his personal interests.

“In order to keep his post the President is ready to!
sell even Georgia’s independence,” Saakashvili said at the news briefing on August 2.

The opposition leader calls the deal between the US company AES and the Russian company Unified Energy Systems (UES) “a fraud”, adding that Russia will use its monopoly over the energy sector for political pressure on Georgia.
