IMF Urges Government to Prepare Plan to Overcome Budgetary Problems

(Tbilisi, June 30, 2003, Civil Georgia) – The IMF Mission, which pays a two-week visit to Georgia to assess the fulfillment of its recommendations by the Georgian government, gave a 48-hour term to the authority to prepare a particular plan of actions on overcoming the budgetary problems.

The IMF Mission raised this demand during the meeting at the Finance Ministry today. State Minister Avtandil Jorbenadze also attended the meeting.

Reduction of the expenditures of the budget by 85 million Lari, amendments to the tax code and payment of the debt on pensions were top issues pushed by the IMF mission during the meeting with the Finance and State Ministers today.

Head of the IMF Mission Paulo Neuhaus while meeting with the Parliamentary Chairperson today subjected the government’s activity to severe criticism.

“Six-month results of the government’s activity will be assessed at October 10 session of the IMF Board of Directors. The issues of the fund’s program restoration in Georgia will be solved afterwards,” Paulo Neuhaus said at the meeting with Burjanadze.
