President Calls Opposition for Compromise

(Tbilisi, June 14 2003, Civil Georgia) – President Shevardnadze in his Monday radiobroadcast today called the opposition parties for compromise. “Otherwise, the country will face chaos and destabilization,” he added.

The rule of composition of the Central Election Commission (CEC) is the main point of dispute between the government and the opposition.

The President offers to compose one half of the CEC half with the representatives of the pro-governmental election alliance and another half with the opposition, while this latter demands to compose the CEC on the parity basis with the representatives of the political parties.

The President also said he is confident that the pro-governmental bloc has a great chance to win the elections due to its effective social-economic program.

President Shevardnadze offered the representatives of the Georgia’s friendly states to attend the upcoming parliamentary elections, scheduled for November 2 in the status of observers.

“I am interested in holding democratic parliamentary elections,” Eduard Shevardnadze said in his Monday radio broadcast.
