The Government and AES Telasi Agree to Supply Subway with Electricity

(Tbilisi. May 6, 2003. Civil Georgia) – The American power distribution company AES Telasi and the Georgian government reached an agreement. The State Minister of Georgia ordered unfreezing the company’s accounts.

In response general manager of the company Ignassio Irribaren confirmed that the company will not cut electricity supply to the subway of the capital city, Tbiltrans (public transportation company) and Tbiltskalkanal (water supply company) companies, as it has happened several times during the day.

These issues were discussed at the special meeting in the State Chancellery after unsuccessful meeting on the same topic in the Finance Ministry earlier today. The power distribution company demanded payment of all debts by the budget organizations.

Finance Minister Mirian Gogiashvili and Energy Minister David Mirtskhulava criticized the company for cutting power supply to the strategic facilities in the capital city.

Currently the municipality has accumulated 3,6 million Laris (approximately $1,7 million) to repay the debts. The authorities hope that the company will not suspend power supply again to the Tbilisi subway.
