CUG Parliamentary Faction Leader Calls to Create ?Alternative Parliament?

(Tbilisi. March 14, 2003. Civil Georgia) – After the all-day heated discussions at the Parliamentary session on March 13, leader of the pro-Presidential Citizens? Union of Georgia (CUG) faction Vitali Khazaradze called the pro-governmental faction ?to create an alternative Parliament.?

At the Parliamentary session on March 13 Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Procedures reported to the MPs ruling of the Committee regarding the legitimacy of adoption of the proposal of the opposition United Democrats faction on increase of the minimal salary, approved by the Parliament on February 28 and opposed by the President and the government.

The opposition factions try to delay discussion and voting of the ruling of the Committee on Procedures, which reads that the proposal was adopted with procedural violations, thus should be canceled.

The pro-Presidential Parliamentary factions accused Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze in assisting opposition to delay discussion and voting regarding the issue.

Vitali Khazaradze, leader of the CUG faction proposed the MPs ?to simplify the procedure of impeachment of the Parliamentary Chairperson? and dismiss Nino Burjanadze. Parliamentary Chairperson said that Khazaradze?s statement regarding the creation of the alternative Parliament ?is anti-constitutional.?

It is anticipated that the heated debates concerning the issue will continue at the Parliamentary session today.
