Law on Increase of Minimal Salary Dominates in Georgian Politics

(Tbilisi. March 10, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Economic Forum dedicated to the law on increase of the minimal salary to the subsistence level was held today in the Parliament.

Parliamentary Chairperson, leaders of the Parliamentary factions, Ministers of Finance and Economy attended the forum.

The Parliament adopted the law on February 28 with 90 votes. The law, elaborated by the opposition United Democrats Party considers increase of the minimal salary to the minimum subsistence level of 115 Lari (USD 52.9).

Finance and Economy Ministers said that the implementation of the law would lead to the economic stagnation and inflation.

Parliamentary Committee on Procedures ruled on March 7 meeting that the law on increase of the minimal salary to the subsistence level was adopted with the procedural violations. The pro-governmental Parliamentary factions demanded to declare the law as invalid.

The decision of the Parliamentary Committee on Procedures will be discussed at the Parliamentary Bureau meeting, and only after the Bureau?s go-ahead the Committee?s decision will be discussed at the Parliamentary session.

At the session MPs will decide whether to take the Committee?s recommendation to declare the law as invalid into consideration, or not.

In his Monday radiobroadcast on March 10 President Shevardnadze expressed hope that ?the Parliament would revise its decision? and would not undermine economic stability.
