Georgia to Push Russian Military Bases Issue at the OSCE Summit

(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, December 6, 2002) – Georgian Foreign Ministry delegation participating in the OSCE summit in Porto, Portugal on 6 and 7 December will raise the issue of the Russian military bases deployed in Georgia.

The Foreign Ministers from OSCE participating states will meet in Porto to agree on new measures to combat terrorism and deal with new threats to security, at their Tenth Ministerial Council.

Deputy Foreign Minister Davit Aptsiauri will lead the Georgian delegation.

Georgia demands closure of Batumi and Akhalkalaki military bases from Russia. The issue of Gudauta military base in breakaway Abkhazia is still unclear. Russia claims it has already pulled out from the base, while the Georgian side is doubtful.
