Georgia Wants Russia to Pay Military Debts

(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, December 4, 2002) – Georgian Deputy Finance Minister reported to the Parliament today information regarding the Russia’s military debt towards Georgia.

According to the Finance Ministry the debt consists up to USD 15 billion, including the shares of the Soviet arms and the rent for the use of the military bases in Georgia.

Georgia and Russia have disagreements over debts concerning the former Soviet Union’s arms.

Georgia claims that the Russian side withdrew all the military equipment from the Soviet military bases that where deployed in Georgia.

Georgian MPs also want from Russia to pay rent for the use of its military bases deployed on Georgian territory.

At the moment at least three military base of Russia operates in Georgia: Batumi, Autonomous Republic of Adjara, Akhalkalaki, southern Georgia and Guduatu, breakaway Abkhazia. There also is a headquarters of the Group of Russian Troops in Trans-Caucasus in Tbilisi.

On December 5 Georgian Parliament will adopt the resolution urging the government for launching activity in order to push the debt issue in talks with Russia.
