BP Nears a Deadline for Responding to the Official Queries
(Tbilisi, November 28, 2002, Civil Georgia) Experts of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, British Petroleum and the Georgian International Oil Corporation (GIOC), continue consultations concerning ecological standards to be applied to thee Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline, Rustavi 2 TV reports.
The Ministry of Environment has to issue permission for construction of the pipeline in Georgia until November 30. But for this constructors of the pipeline have to satisfy 32 requirements, set by the Ministry, to ensure ecological safety of the project. British Petroleum has to respond to these requirements by the end of the day.
On November 27 environmentalists gathered in front of GIOC office in sign of protest of building the pipeline through Borjomi valley. The protesters demanded alternation of route of this 20-km long part of the pipeline.
During the recent month international and British environmental and human rights organizations have been objecting to the project, believing that the pipeline will irreversibly damage fragile ecology of the region.
