Parliament Discusses Local Self-Governance Election
(Tbilisi, April 4, Civil Georgia) – Georgian Parliament is to discuss amendments in the law on local self-governance elections on April 4.
Recently the most of the Parliamentarian factions agreed that the city mayors, as well as heads and governors of the provincial districts should be elected at least from the Sakrebulos [local elected councils] members and not appointed by the President as it is now.
Pro-Presidential factions, Alliance for New Georgia and Tanadgoma do not support city mayors and provincial governors’ election.
President Shevardnadze has already set a date for the local self-governance elections for June 2, 2002.
