Georgia to Fulfill UN Recommendation Concerning Kodori Gorge

(Tbilisi, February 4, Civil Georgia) – “Security of Kodori gorge is vital for us, Georgia will protect the gorge and at the same time will fulfill UN Security Council’s recommendation,” President Shevardnadze stated on February 4.

UN Security Council’s resolution adopted on January 31 called for the “full and expeditious” implementation of a protocol signed by the Georgian and Abkhazian sides on 17 January regarding the situation in the Kodori gorge.

According to the protocol Georgia should pull out its military units from Kodori gorge, the only territory in breakaway Abkhazia controlled by the Georgian government.

Georgian Defense Minster Davit Tevzadze stated earlier that the authorities work over replacement of Defense Ministry’s military units with the internal troops of Georgia.
