Chief of State Audit Agency Nominated

Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze nominated Deputy Foreign Minister Levan Choladze as head of the main state audit agency, the Chamber of Control, on May 7.

The position has been vacant since the death of former chairman Zurab Soselia in March.

Opposition lawmakers have been calling for the nomination of an opposition-affiliated candidate, but the parliamentary chairperson rejected the calls, saying that the ruling majority wanted a nonpartisan candidate.

?It was difficult for me to pick a person for this position; a person who would have been acceptable for the opposition, the president and the ruling majority. I think we have reached a consensus,? Burjanadze said.

Levan Choladze, 29, served in the National Security Council (NSC) and briefly held the position of Secretary of the NSC before he was appointed as the deputy foreign minister in late 2005.

According to the law, a candidate for the position of chief of the state audit agency should be nominated by the parliamentary chairperson and approved by the legislature.
