Margvelashvili Visits Lithuania for Independence Day Celebrations

Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili arrived in Vilnius on February 16 to attend the centennial celebrations of Lithuanian independence.

Speaking at the ceremony, attended by top officials from Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Germany, Finland, Iceland and Ukraine, as well as the Presidents of the European Commission and the European Council, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė congratulated Lithuanian people on restoration of independence.

“At the beginning of the past century, we looked forward with great hope to any sign of support. Today we know that we have true friends and allies, and their strong supportive shoulder,” the Lithuanian President’s press office quoted Grybauskaitė as saying. “It is a great pleasure to see many of our friends here today! Thank you all for being together with us.”

During his working visit to Vilnius, President Margvelashvili met with his Icelandic and Finnish counterparts, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson and Sauli Niinistö, respectively, and invited them to Tbilisi to participate in the events marking 100th anniversary of Georgia’s independence.

During the meetings with the two leaders, the parties emphasized the importance of supporting Georgia’s territorial integrity and non-recognition policy. Georgia’s European integration, as well as the possibilities of intensification of bilateral relations in terms of political, economic and trade relations, were also explored.

“My visit to Vilnius enabled me to stand beside the Lithuanian people and stay with my closest friend and the supporter of our country – Dalia Grybauskaitė – at the time, when she was celebrating the 100th anniversary of restoration of Lithuania’s independence,” Margvelashvili told reporters.

He also noted that similar forums help establish contacts with “such countries, with whom Georgia needs to integrate further,” and also “enable us to talk with the European leaders about how to develop our cooperation in the future for the benefit of Georgia and the region.”
