Tillerson: U.S. ‘Values’ Partnership with Georgia

“We value Georgia’s steadfast partnership and look forward to continuing to advance our shared interests and values,” Unites States Secretary of State Rex Tillerson wrote in his press statement on June 6 on the occasion of Georgia’s Independence Day.

“The United States is deeply grateful for the sacrifice of Georgia’s troops serving with us in Afghanistan and elsewhere around the world. Together, we celebrate Georgia’s successes and mourn those who have perished in the fight against terrorism,” the statement reads.

“Georgia continues to inspire others with its leadership and commitment to our shared belief in the power of democratic principles,” the Secretary of State said and added that the United States “strongly supports Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders as well as its choice to chart its own future within the community of free nations.”

“We look forward to many years of continued cooperation and friendship to advance stability and prosperity for our two countries,” Tillerson concluded.

The press statement comes just four days after President Donald Trump sent a congratulatory letter to Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili.

“It is my great honor to wish you and the people of Georgia congratulations on your Independence Day on May 26,” said the letter, published by the Prime Minister’s press office on June 3.

“The United States and Georgia share a deep and enduring partnership, which we discussed during your recent visit to Washington and which I have no doubt will continue to strengthen in the years to come,” Trump wrote, referring to Giorgi Kvirikashvili’s visit to the United States on May 8-10, when the two had a brief encounter.

President Trump noted that “since independence, Georgia has emerged as a democratic leader and a contributor to global security,” and added that the United States “remains grateful” for Georgia’s sacrifices in Afghanistan, “where Georgian troops serve bravely alongside U.S. and international forces as part of NATO’s important mission there.”

“We also appreciate your partnership in the coalition to destroy the scourge of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria,” the U.S. President also noted.

In the words of Donald Trump, “in a region that faces insecurity and outside pressure, Georgia has shown courage and determination in charting its own future.” The United States “will continue to support that choice, as Georgian independence and democracy remain an inspiration to the world.”

“The United States also remains steadfast in supporting Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. My administration and I look forward to continuing our work together to achieve peace, prosperity, and security for our two countries,” Trump concluded.
