Georgian Bishop Among U.S. State Secretary’s International Women of Courage Award Winners

Bishop Rusudan Gotsiridze of the Evangelical Baptist Church of Georgia is among those ten awardees across the globe, who have been selected as winners of the U.S. Secretary of State’s annual International Women of Courage Award.
 
This is the first time a Georgian citizen has won this award, which was established in 2007.

According to the announcement by the Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues, the award recognizes Bishop Gotsiridze’s brave advocacy for gender equality and the equal protection of all of Georgia’s minorities and also notes that she was one of the first members of the religious community to speak in support of the rights of Georgia’s LGBT community.

The U.S. embassy in Tbilisi said: “The United States and Georgia recognize the broader responsibility to end intolerance against all people, especially those who are marginalized.  This award is symbol of that joint fight against discrimination and intolerance in all their forms.”
