French, German FMs’ Visit to Georgia Postponed
A joint visit of French and German Foreign Ministers to Georgia has been postponed because of developments in Ukraine, according to the Georgian Foreign Ministry.
An extraordinary meeting of the EU foreign ministers is planned in Brussels on March 3 to discuss EU’s response to developments in Ukraine.
Foreign Ministers of France and Germany, Laurent Fabius and Frank-Walter Steinmeier, respectively, were planning the joint visit to Moldova and Georgia for March 3-4.
New date of joint visit has not yet been set, according to a spokesperson of the Georgian Foreign Ministry.
The French and German foreign ministers announced in January about intention to pay joint visits to Moldova and Georgia as part of their agreement to intensify coordination between Berlin and Paris including towards regions and countries of particular interest for the EU.
A visit of EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle, who was scheduled to start meetings in Tbilisi on March 3, was delayed for a day for the same reason. Füle tweeted on Monday that he’s leaving for Tbilisi tonight and will have discussions with Georgian interlocutors tomorrow on “further strengthening of our cooperation.”
After Georgian Foreign Minister Maia Panjikidze’s phone conversation with her Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Deshchytsia on March 2, the Georgian Foreign Ministry said that the two ministers “deemed it necessary for the European Union to clearly demonstrate European perspective to Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, which would be yet another step forward towards the EU.”
