Saakashvili Speaks of ‘Positive Sides’ of Cooperation with Russia

President Saakashvili said on January 23 that apart from ?bad examples of relations? between Russia and Georgia, there are ?positive examples of cooperation? between Georgia and Russian in the energy sector.

Saakashvili was speaking at an official opening ceremony of a gas turbine electricity generator in Gardabani, south of the capital Tbilisi. Russian VneshTorgBank invested USD 40 million to purchase the gas turbines.

?I think this is a good example of cooperation. What occurred yesterday [on January 22, when two gas pipelines and a power transmission line were blown-up in the North Caucasus] is a bad example of a relationship between countries. But today we witness a good example of Georgian-American-Russian cooperation. We are always open for such cooperation and hope that no more bad examples will take place again,? Saakashvili said at the opening ceremony.

The new gas turbine will be put into operation as soon as the gas supply from Russia is restored. Initially, it is expected that the gas turbine generator will produce 110 megawatts of electricity.

Russian Ambassador to Georgia Vladimir Chkhikvishvili also commented on this new gas turbine generator on January 23 and said that implementation of this project was made possible as a result of investments by the Russian side.
