International Conference Addresses the Issue of Detainee’s Torture in Georgia

The EU-backed conference titled “Problem of Detainee Torture in Georgia” was held on March 19-23 in Gudauri, Georgia.

Human rights NGOs from Georgia and the European Union member countries, representatives of media, advocacy, penitentiary system and law enforcement agencies were invited to the conference.

Changes in legislation, reforms of the Interior Ministry, Prosecutor’s Office and penitentiaries, issues of the independence of court and media, the role of advocacy, prisoners’ rights were discussed at the conference.

Main outcomes of the conference is the establishment of the NGO and experts coalition aimed at the protection of civil rights.
