Religious Organizations Call to Curb Excommunicated Priest’s Extremism

(Tbilisi, February 14, Civil Georgia) – Representatives of six religious organizations are concerned with the priest Basil Mkalavishvili’s activity, who is excommunicated by the Georgian Orthodox Church.

Heads of the Armenian Church, the Evangelical-Lutheran Church, the Catholic Church, the Jewish community, the Caucasus Islamic representative’s office and the Evangelistic-Baptist Church in Georgia sent an appeal to Georgian President condemning aggressive religious extremism.

“We remain hopeful that you will do your best to curb everything that goes counter to the tradition of religious tolerance in Georgia and the Georgian constitution,” the appeal states.

The group of Basil Mkalavishvili is known for violent attacks on non-orthodox Christian groups, especially Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Georgian Foreign Affairs Minister stated on February 13, commenting the appeal, that Georgia’s international reputation is seriously damaged with Mkalavishvili’s religious extremism.
