Investigating the Murder Case of Giorgi Sanaia is in the Government’s Advantage

It was the funeral of Giorgi Sanaia, leading journalist of television company Rustavi-2, yesterday. Thousands of people had gathered around the Sioni Cathedral, where the body rested. The President of Georgia and other authorities were also present there. Common citizens were quite annoyed to see them. “Death of Giorgi Sanaia, this big grief, will unite us all”, one of them told the Akhali Taoba. Georgians have not been that united since the national-independence movement 10-12 years ago in Georgia.

“Situation might become tenser in Georgia”, the Dilis Gazeti states. “Some people might use the murder for their advantage, for realizing their target, call people for protests and encourage them against the government”. The best way to settle everything down is to investigate the murder case properly and find the criminal. The population, journalists and even authorities agree on that.

Giorgi Sanaia’s close friend and leader of the National-Democracy Party Irina Sarishvili is sure that investigating the murder case is in Interior Minister Kakha Targamadze’s sphere of interest because his further success in the executive board very much depends on proper investigation of the case.

The majority of politicians expels personal motive of the crime. “I think the murderer was quite well informed who he was killing and what could happen afterwards”, Elene Tevdoradze, head of the Human Rights Defense Committee, told the Akhali Taoba. Like other authorities she is absolutely positive that the murder was political.

The FBI representatives came to Tbilisi yesterday in order to participate in the investigation of Giorgi Sanaia’s murder case. The Interior Ministry has not indicated their exact number and specialty yet.

Protest actions have been occurring in Georgia since the death of the journalist. One part of journalist groups, the Rustavi-2 among them, does not take part in the protests. “Will the Rustavi-2 arrange meetings from now on? According to the general director of the television company Erosi Kitsmarishvili, his and his colleagues’ action is up to how the investigation will go on”, the Resonance states.
