Georgia Commemorates Chechen and Ingush Deportation

Georgia’s State Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality and the Vainakh community of Georgia organized a roundtable commemorating the 73rd anniversary of the Chechen and Ingush deportation by the Soviet Union.

The office of the State Minister reported on February 23 that elders from Georgia’s Pankisi gorge, populated predominantly by ethnic Kists, a sub-group of the Chechen people, as well as a delegation from Ingushetia, one of Russia’s republics in the North Caucasus, were present at the event.

Deputy Reconciliation Minister Petre Kankava, who also attended the meeting, told the participants that the deportation was “a grave tragedy” and that Georgians “stood together” with the Chechen and the Ingush people in their sufferings.

“Video conference with a similar event in Ingushetia was conducted,” the State Minister’s office also said in its statement.
