Georgia Wins Olympic Gold and Bronze in Weightlifting
Georgia’s Lasha Talakhadze won the men’s over 105kg weightlifting with a world record, clinching his country’s first gold medal of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Georgia’s Irakli Turmanidze won the bronze medal in the same weight category and Armenia’s Gor Minasyan took silver.
It was the first time in Olympic history that two athletes from Georgia had shared the same podium.
22-year-old Lasha Talakhadze lifted a combined total of 473kg, beating the world record by one kilogram, and runner up Minasyan by 22kg.
Talakhadze’s gold and Turmanidze’s bronze brings Georgia’s overall medal tally at the Rio Olympics to 5 – one gold, one silver and three bronze medals.
Shmagi Bolkvadze won bronze in men’s 66kg Greco-Roman wrestling on August 16.
Lasha Shavdatuashvili gave Georgia its first medal of the Rio 2016 after winning bronze in men’s 73-kilogram category in judo and Varlam Liparteliani took silver in men’s 90 kg judo.
