Visit of Georgia’s Chief of Army Staff to Ukraine

Chief of the General Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces, Maj. Gen. Vakhtang Kapanadze paid a three-day visit to Ukraine this week, the Georgian Ministry of Defense said on July 8.
 
He met Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Gen. Viktor Muzhenko, to discuss bilateral cooperation, the Georgian MoD said.

It said that the focus was made on “holding of large-scale joint military exercises and cooperation in education.”

Georgia’s assistance in providing rehabilitation courses to the Ukrainian soldiers was also discussed, according to the MoD.

34 Ukrainian soldiers underwent rehabilitation courses in Rehabilitation Center for Wounded Military Service Members in Tserovani, Georgia.

“We have a lot of issues to discuss together and share experience. I mean experience of Georgian-Russian war, preparation of troops’ deployment, volunteer formations within the army, rehabilitation of soldiers wounded in action,” Gen. Muzhenko said after meeting his Georgian counterpart on July 5.

Maj. Gen. Kapanadze also met Ukraine’s Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak

“Deepening of defense cooperation, as well as security challenges in the region was discussed,” the Georgian MoD said.

Maj. Gen. Kapanadze also traveled to western Ukrainian region of Lviv, where he visited Rapid Trident 2016 military exercises at the International Peacekeeping and Security Center in Yavoriv.

8 Georgian service members participate in the two-week long Rapid Trident exercises of NATO and partner nations, which also involves up to 2,000 troops from the U.S., Ukraine, Bulgaria, Canada, Great Britain, Moldova, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Romania, Sweden and Turkey.
