Georgian, German Foreign Ministers Meet in Berlin

Georgia’s Foreign Minister and Deputy PM Giorgi Kvirikashvili met his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin on October 28.

The foreign ministers said that bilateral economic cooperation; Georgia’s Association Agreement with the EU, as well as breakaway South Ossetia and Abkhazia, relations with Russia and situation in Ukraine were discussed.

Steinmeier said that Georgia can count on Germany’s further support in implementation of the Association Agreement with the EU.

The Georgian Foreign Minister said that implementation of EU visa liberalisation action plan by Georgia was also discussed.

“Germany’s support in this regard is very important. Georgia has successfully implemented technical requirements and now we are waiting for a positive report [from the European Commission in mid-December] and then for the political decision by the EU-member states,” Kvirikashvili said.

During his visit to Berlin, the Georgian Foreign Minister also met Chancellor Angela Merkel’s foreign and security policy adviser Christoph Heusgen. Kvirikashvili, who was the Minister of Economy before becoming the Foreign Minister, also met with executives from the Eastern Europe Business Association of Germany and the Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations, business lobby groups representing German industry in eastern Europe.
