President’s State of the Nation Address Delayed Until Late March

President Giorgi Margvelashvili’s annual state of the nation address in the Parliament has been rescheduled from initially planned March 18 to March 31, Georgian parliament speaker, Davit Usupashvili, and president’s office said Monday.

They said without elaborating details that the address has been postponed upon the President’s request.

Lawmakers from the UNM and Free Democrats opposition parties have called for debates following the President’s speech, but MPs from the Georgian Dream ruling coalition are reluctant.

President Margvelashvili said in January that he hopes the government members would not snub his annual address like it happened last year. But PM Irakli Garibashvili reiterated on March 16 that he does not deem it necessary for the government members to be present.
