OSCE PA Secretary General Visits Tbilisi
OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Secretary General Spencer Oliver met on January 17 with Georgian leadership and senior lawmakers in Tbilisi to discuss recent political and security developments.
Georgia will host OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s annual session in 2016. On January 18 Spencer Oliver will tour the facilities and sites that will host the event – the largest annual gathering of the Assembly, which is the parliamentary dimension of the OSCE with over 320 lawmakers from the organization’s 57 participating states. Last year Assembly’s annual session was held in Baku. This year the event will be hosted by Helsinki.
“While world leaders focus on efforts to resolve the crisis in Ukraine, no one should overlook that Georgia, too, has had its territorial integrity breached,” the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Secretary General said.
“Notwithstanding that enormous challenge, this country has pushed ahead with its reform agenda. I welcome the commitment expressed by Georgia’s government and parliamentary leaders to continue to fight corruption, improve the rule of law and pursue other steps to strengthen democracy,” he said.
He met President Giorgi Margvelashvili; PM Irakli Garibashvili; parliament speaker Davit Usupashvili and other senior lawmakers including from the opposition groups.
