CEC: Number of Voters 3.53 Million

There are total of 3,537,719 voters in Georgia eligible to cast ballot in the October 27 presidential election, according to updated data released by the Central Election Commission (CEC) on Saturday.

In last year’s parliamentary elections, there were 3,613,851 citizens in the voter lists – 76,132 more than now.

Difference between the previous and current figures is attributed by the authorities mainly to removal of de-registered voters from the lists.

The list is compiled by the CEC based on data provided mainly by the State Service Development Agency (SSDA), which is within the Ministry of Justice.

According to SSDA, slightly over 98,000 voters were de-registered from the list mainly because of being incorrectly registered to specific addresses.

CEC then subtracted voters abroad and the actual number of de-registered voters was set at 74,896, according to the election administration.

October 10 was the deadline for these de-registered voters to undergo re-registration; 9,142 voters re-registered themselves in the lists, according to SSDA.

In addition 48,458 voters, who have registered themselves with Georgian diplomatic missions abroad, will be able to cast ballot in the October 27 presidential election in total of 52 overseas precincts in 36 countries, including two precincts in Afghanistan for about 1,560 Georgian soldiers serving in ISAF mission (early voting is held for Georgian troops in Afghanistan on October 20), according to CEC. Number of voters abroad was 45,100 during the October 2012 parliamentary elections.

Not counting October 2012 parliamentary elections, the largest number of voters in Georgia was registered in May 1991 presidential election – 3,594,810 and in May 2010 local elections – 3,544,770.

Data released by the CEC also includes number of voters in each of the 73 election districts.

The largest constituency is Georgia’s second-largest city of Kutaisi with 158,967 voters, followed by Tbilisi’s Gldani and Samgori districts with 141,263 and 139,934 voters, respectively.

The smallest constituencies are Kazbegi, a mountainous district in Mtskheta-Mtianeti region with 5,714 voters and Lentekhi in mountainous Racha-Lechkhumi region with 5,968 voters.
