UNM Wants to Make Pro-Western Course Legally Binding for Govt

President Saakashvili’s United National Movement (UNM) party said on January 30 it would initiate a bill which, if approved by the Parliament, would make pro-Western foreign policy course legally binding for any government in Georgia.

UNM MP Giorgi Baramidze, who is vice speaker of the Parliament, said that the bill on “irreversibility of Georgia’s foreign policy course” would have three components.

The first one will obligate the government to pursue unwavering course towards joining NATO and the European Union “so that not a single government to be able to turn away from this path,” MP Baramidze said.

The second component will obligate government to remain committed to promoting “non-recognition policy” and “de-occupation” of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and the third one will ban joining Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and other Russian-led groupings, Baramidze said.

“Of course there are not 100% guarantees, but it would at least provide legal guarantees for keeping our foreign policy course unchanged,” said Baramidze, who expressed hope that the bill would be passed by the Parliament unanimously.
