Ex-Governor of Mtskheta-Mtianeti Region Arrested
Cesar Chocheli, who was governor of Mtskheta-Mtianeti region from early 2008 till November 2012, was arrested on charges related to illegal entrepreneurship and money laundering, Finance Ministry’s investigations service said on January 24.
Finance Ministry’s investigative service claims that while serving as governor Chocheli was “illegally involved” in businesses of a construction and energy company New Energy, which was a state contractor in various projects.
Chocheli denies allegations, his lawyer Mamuka Tchabashvili told journalists late on January 23. He also said that charges were not yet formally filed against Chocheli.
